This large conifer forms a narrow to broad conical habit with a whitish brown bark that sheds in rounded thin plates. The shoots are buff white with stiff blue green needle-like leaves and the red-yellowish flowers appear in spring followed by green cones.

Picea glaucais naturally found from Alaska to Newfoundland and south to Michigan and Wisconsin growing in forest near low damp areas around streams and beside lakes, to an altitude of 1,400m (5,000ft).
It prefers an open sunny position and grows in moist well drained fertile soils that are tending acidic with a pH 4.5-7.5.
White spruce has been cultivated in many temperate climates in the northern hemisphere and is planted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen or used in woodland settings preferring a cool moist climate. ID 1617
