This large deciduous tree has a solitary trunk with dark brown, ridged bark and forms a broad rounded crown. It has divided light green leaves and the yellow-green male and female flowers appear during spring and are followed by editable fleshy fruit.

Juglans nigrais naturally found in central and eastern USA growing along stream banks near deserts or in the mountains tolerating rockery well drained soils in an open sunny position and is drought tender but frost resistant.

Black Walnut is grown for its domed habit and its fruit. It is planted in parks and large gardens for summer shade and as a lawn specimen. It has been planted in many temperate regions and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is extensively cultivated in Mexico and Arizona for its fruit. ID 1616
