This deciduous tree has an upright greyish trunk with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. The bright green narrow willow-like leaves turn golden-yellow during autumn and the greenish tassel-like pendant flowers appear in spring, followed by acorns.

Quercus phellosis naturally found south-eastern North America from Texas to northern Florida and extending to southern New York growing in low lands and commonly associated with streams or rivers, from sea-level to an altitude of 400 m (1,200 ft).

It grows in an open sunny to semi-shaded, protected to expose positions and tolerates most well-drained fertile moist soils with a pH 4.5 - 5.5. It is drought tender but frost tolerant.

Willow Oak is grown for its willow-like appearance and autumn foliage colour preferring a moist position. It is planted as a specimen around a water feature or used for summer shade in parks and large gardens. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and in warmer climates it may be evergreen.It can also be grown as a street tree and around buildings. ID 1607
