This large shrub to small tree has a single or multiple stems with greyish bark and slender branches forming a rounded crown. It has bright green lobed leaves and the small creamy white cup-shaped flowers appear in clusters in mid-spring then followed by winged fruit.

Acer tataricumis naturally found from Austria to eastern Europe and extending to cool temperate Asia and Japan. It normally grows in woodlands in well-drained moist organic rich soils and is pH adaptable. This shrub prefers a sunny protected position and is slightly drought and frost tolerant.
Tartarian Maple is grown for its habit and autumn colour and is planted in woodland gardens parks and as a specimen in suburban gardens for screening. It tolerates a wide range of conditions and establishes in 2 to 3 years and is moderately long lived. There are several cultivars available with varying fruit and or colour.
