This large hardwood tree has a greyish trunk with diamond-patterned bark and upright spreading branches forming a conical habit. It has divided dark green leaves with oblong leaflets that turn yellow in autumn and the small flowers appear in early spring.

White Ash is grown for its habit and timber. It is planted ornamentally in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen tree for shade. The easily worked, strong and elastic timber has been used since prehistoric times for stone axe handles to modern times for wood turning and coachwork. It is normally straight grained and composed of two layers, springwood and denser summerwood.
