This deciduous tree has spreading branches that are armed with thorns and form a domed crown. It has oblong glossy dark green leaves that turn crimson in autumn and the small white flowers appear in clusters in early summer followed by rounded red fruit.

It is also planted along borders for colour contrast and screening. It establishes in 3 to 5 years tolerating most soils and positions. Care should be taken when handling as it has large thorns.
