This large deciduous tree has a grey furrowed trunk with arching branches that are pendent at the tips, forming a broad crown. It has ovate dark green toothed leaves and the bright red bell-shaped flowers appear in clusters during spring.

The American White Elm is a large tree that is grown for it graceful growth habit. It is a very hardy tree and is planted along avenues and is parks and large gardens as a specimen or summer shade. It is naturally a very large tree reaching 36m (120ft) forming a buttress base with gracefully pendulous branches but under cultivation the tree is normally half the size.
