This herbaceous perennial climber has a rhizome with clockwise twinning reddish-green rough stems. It has light green lobed, toothed leaves and the small male and pendant greenish female flowers appear in a spike on different plants during summer.

Humulus lupulusis naturally found from North America to Europe but has naturalised in New Zealand and Tasmania, Australia. It grows in a moderately fertile well-drained sandy to clay loam with reliable moisture in a sunny to semi shaded open position and is drought tender but frost tolerant.

Common Hop is a twinning vine that is grown for its pendant flowers and dense cover. It is grown on trellises or over fences and structures for screening or for shade. It establishes in one season from seed and is commonly found growing along roadsides and in disturbed soils.
