This perennial herb has branching edible aromatic rhizomes that give rise to cane-like stems and forms a bushy habit. It has dark green lanced-shaped leaves and the pale yellow tube-shaped flowers appears in an erect spike during summer.

Zingiber officinaleis naturally found in south-east Asia growing in tropical rainforest in well drained moist slightly acidic soils. It prefers a sunny to semi shade protected position and is drought and frost tender.

The Common Ginger is a perennial that is grown for its edible rhizomes and is used in herb or vegetable gardens, commercially or for home use. It is also grown in containers establishing in one season from division and if grownn under glass it should be rested during winter. It has both culinary and medicinally uses. ID 1524

It has been used for thousands of years for medicinal uses and contains oil consisting of camphene, phellandrene, zingiberene and zingerone these act as a counterirritant and aids in the digestion of fatty food.
