This coniferous tree forms an upright conical habit when young becoming flat toped on maturity. It has red scaly bark in the upper part and is dark and fissured at the base. The needle-like leaves are mid-green and flowers appear during spring forming cones.

Pinus tabuliformisis naturally found from northern China to Korea growing on hillsides and in the mountains in moderately fertile well drained soils in a open sunny position and is drought tender but frost resistant.

The Chinese Red Pine is an attractive tree that is grown for its bark and foliage colour and is planted in parks and large gardens as a specimen. It is also grown in mountain gardens establishing in 3 to 5 years but may be difficult to obtain from nurseries. ID 1491
