This broadly conical tree has drooping branches and at high altitudes forms a shrub-like habit. When young the bark is whitish, smooth maturing to dark brown. It has dark-green needle-like leaves and reddish male flowers in spring followed by cones.

Pinus flexilisis naturally found from Canada to southern California and New Mexico grows to altitudes of 33,000m (11,000ft) in moderately fertile well drained soils. It prefers a open sunny position and is drought, frost and wind tolerant.

Limber Pine is a conifer that is grown for its conical habit and is planted in large gardens, parks or used for reforestation. It is slow growing establishing in 4 to 7 years and is long lived up to 200 years. It may be planted as a lawn specimen in a mountain garden or as a windbreak. ID 1489

It is typically found on ridge tops or rocky foothills either as pure stands but more commonly scattered amongst other conifers. It has slow growth maturing in 100 to 200 years and tends to have sparse branching with a strong taproot making it very wind tolerant.
