This shrub has intricate branching and has a spreading to mat forming habit. It has dark glossy green rounded leaves that become reddish during autumn and the small white to pink urn-shaped flowers appear in a cluster from winter to early summer and followed by scarlet fruit.

Arctostaphylos uva-urisis naturally found from Europe to northern Asia and North America growing in coniferous woodlands or alpine regions and in coastal dunes from sea level to an altitude of 3100 m (10,230 ft).

It prefers a moist to dry well drained acidic, sandy stony or siliceous based soils with a pH 5-7 but will tolerate lime-based soils and grows in a open sunny position and tolerates exposed sites, salt laden winds and drought.

Common Bearberry is grown for its spreading low habit and its flowers. It is planted in parks and gardens as a ground cover or spill-over above retaining walls. It may also be grown in a container establishing in 3 to 5 years and is long lived, up to 100 years.
