This tree has an upright spreading crown or a shrubby habit under cultivation with a blackish trunk. It has spiny toothed rounded light to dark green leaves and produces male and female flowers during spring followed by slender pointed acorns.

Quercus agrifoliais naturally found in California USA growing in coastal positions prefering drier soil types and has variable growth habits. It grows in a protected sunny position and is frost and drought tolerant.

The California Live Oak is variable forming a shrub to large tree and is grown as a specimen in parks and gardens for shade or for screening along borders. It is slow growing establishing in 4 to 6 years but is long lived. It is not commonly found outside its native habitat and may be difficult to obtain. ID 1412
