This spreading shrub has climbing silky-haired branchlets that form a bushy habit. It has divided dark green leaves with oblong leaflets and the red pendulous beaked-shaped flowers appear in a raceme during early spring.

Clianthus puniceusis naturally found in the North Island of New Zealand in the islets of The Bay of Islands and adjacent mainland where it is not commonly found and has become rare.
It grows in most well drained soils and prefers a open to protected sunny position and is drought tolerant but heavy-frost tender.
