This large vigorous large tree has an upright greyish trunk that becomes furrowed and ascending spreading branches that form a conical habit. It has glossy dark green needle-like leaves and the yellow-green flowers appear in spring and followed by cones.

Abies grandisis naturally found in the Rocky Mountains in North America from Vancouver Island to the interior of British Columbia and down the west coast to California from sea level to an altitude of 1500 m (5,000ft).

It prefers deep moist alluvial soils but will tolerate a wide range of well drained moderately fertile soils with a pH 5-7. It prefers an open sunny position and is frost and snow tolerant.

Note:
This tree is fast growing and is used by the forestry industry, attaining growth at 1.5m (5ft) per year producing brittle young branchlets. The easily worked light coloured timber has a poor odour and is commonly referred to as "stinky fir" but the timber is widely used as lumber or for interior finishes.
