This slender palm has a solitary or multiple trunks that are closely ringed with leaf scars. The long stalked divided dull green fronds are arching and the spent fronds form a skirt. The yellowish flowers appeer during summer and are followed by red fruit.

It is often found as an understorey plant growing in moist but well drained organic rich soil types. It prefers a shaded to semi-shaded protected position and is drought and frost tender.

Atherton Palm is a small shade loving palm that is grown outdoors in warm climates and is used as an understorey or in group plantings. It is also grown in containers when young and in cool climates it is used as indoor or glasshouse specimen establishing from seed in 3 to 5 years. ID 1392
