This large palm has a solitary grey ringed trunk with a crown of large arching dark green divided fronds. Towards the end of the trees life it produces masses of cream coloured saucer-shaped flowers in large pendant clusters that appear in early summer.

Caryota urensis naturally found from India to Sri Lanka and Malaysia growing on moist, well-drained fertile soils in an open sunny position with some protection from the mid-day sun. It is frost and drought tender.

Sago Palm is grown for its majestic habit and is planted in large gardens or parks as a specimen or in group plantings in a tropical setting. It establishes in 2 to 4 years and is not suitable for domestic gardens. It tolerates coastal and inland positions and is long lived.
Under cultivation the palm rarely reaches its mature hight. ID 1387
