This tree has an upright trunk with a rounded spreading crown with aromatic bright green leather leaves. The yellow-green saucer-shaped flowers appear in clusters towards the end of the branches from late winter to spring followed by purple berries.

Umbellularia californicais natural found in coastal regions of California and Oregon growing in moist well drained soils and prefers a open sunny position and is drought tolerant but heavy-frost tender.

The California Laurel is frost hardy once it is established and is grown as a lawn specimen parks and gardens It is also used as a foundation plant in a new garden and is suitable for coastal regions. The timber is used for house interiors or delicate woodworking. The native Indians used the leaves to relieve headaches and as an insect repellent.
