This rhizomatous perennial has fleshy roots and forms a clump of lax mid-green thick linear leaves. The star-shaped white to pale pink flowers are arranged in a branched cluster above the foliage on a slender stem appearing during spring.

Asphodel is grown for its flowers and is mass planted along garden borders or used in containers. It is suitable for roof or cottage gardens and can be grown in mountain or coastal regions, tolerating salt spray and mild frosts.
