This fast growing shrub has an upright woody branches that form a bushy habit. It has dark green broad lanced-shaped leaves and the abundant purple 2-lipped flowers are accompanied by dark purple bracts and appear in a raceme in late spring.

It is also planted in native gardens and is suitable for coastal regions. Grafted plants are preferred and establish in 2 to 3 years but may be short lived. A very well drained soil is essential.
