The perennial has a short creeping rhizome and upright foliage that forms a clump. It has dark green lanced-shaped leaves that appear at short interval along the rhizome and the solitary creamy bell-shaped flowers appear at the base of the plant during early summer.

Aspidistra elatioris naturally found in woodlands from the Himalayas to Japan growing in moderately fertile moist soils. It prefers open sunny to semi-shaded positions and is drought tolerant but frost tender.

The Cast-iron Plant is a tough perennial that is grown for its foliage and is mass planted along front borders in garden or used around water features as a specimen.
