This epiphytic or lithophyte fern has a thick fleshy rhizomes that forms a clump. It has divided dark green leathery fronds that are arranged in a vase-like cluster and the fertile fronds appear in the centre during late summer.

Drynaria rigidula is naturally found from Australia to India and New Guinea growing on well drained, fertile moist humus rich sandy soils or composted moist leaf mould. It prefers a shaded to a semi-shaded protected position and is frost and drought tender.
