This upright rhizomatous fern has a tufted habit with a short thick trunk and forms a rounded habit. The erect divided fronds are bronze colour maturing to dark green and the slender fertile fronds appear in the centre of the plant during summer.

is naturally found in Australia growing along the margins of salt water rivers and around swampy environments from south-east Queensland and east coast of New South Wales.

It prefers a fertile organic rich moist to boggy soil in a semi-shade to full sun position with wind, frost and drought protection.

Water Fern is grown for its foliage and is planted in shaded rockeries or garden beds and as a potted specimen in a fernery. It is also used as an understorey plant in a tropical garden, commonly around a water feature. In cool climates it is grown under glass and establishes from division in 1 to 2 years and tolerates drier conditions. ID 1288
