This shrub to small tree has a single greyish trunk and spreading smooth branches that form an open rounded crown. It has narrow dark green linear leaves and the small yellow tube-shaped flowers appear in a upright bottlebrush-like spike during early winter.

Banksia cunninghamiiis naturally found in Australia on the east coast from south-east Queensland to Sydney and extending Wilson's Promontory in eastern Victoria growing in sheltered hillsides on the coast and adjoining tablelands.

It tolerates a range of soil types from clay loams to sandstone based soils andprefers a open sunny to semi shaded position and is drought and frost tolerant.

This robust shrub is grown in small to medium size gardens as a specimen or along borders for screening. It is also planted in native gardens for attracting birds and is ideal for coastal or mountain regions and establishes in 2 to 4 years. ID 1274

It is closely related to Banksia spinulosavar. collina but has no lignotuber.
