Phragmites australisis naturally found throughout Australia appearing in and around brackish or fresh water tolerating a depth of 1m (3ft). It prefers alluvial soils that wet and boggy in an open sunny position and is drought tender and mildly frost resistant.
Common Reed is grown for its clumping habit and is planted in and around water features in parks and gardens or used in boggy ground as a feature plant or for soil stabilising. It establishes from division in one season but is too vigorous for domestic gardens, spreading quickly.ID 1221
