This rhizomatous perennial has bright green stems that form a spreading clump habit. It has reduced leaves that are red-brown and appear at the base of the stems and the yellowish-green flowers appear in an open cluster from spring to summer.

Juncus usitatusis naturally found growing along creeks or around ponds from Queensland to New South Wales, Victoria and extending to New Zealand and New Caledonia.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in moderately well drained to wet fertile soils and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Common Rush is grown for its clumping habit and is planted around water courses for soil stabilisation or around ponds. It is also used in large landscapes for a wetlands effect.
