This dioecious shrub to small tree has a short trunk with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has large, dark green heart-shaped pointed leaves and the male and female flowers appear in clusters during late spring.

Macaranga tanariusis naturally found from north-east, New South Wales to eastern Queensland in Australia and extending to New Guinea and south-east Asia growing in subtropical and littoral rainforests. It is commonly associated with water courses or regrowth areas appearing sporadically in open or disturbed ground and a sucker when mature.

It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun position and is frost and drought tender. It is grows on well to moderately drained, organic rich moist soils.

Macaranga is grown for its foliage and habit. It is planted along borders in parks or gardens for screening or used along water courses in rainforest settings. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 2 to 4 years and is moderately long lived. When young this shrub may be grown as an indoor potted plant. ID 1132
