Hakea varia is naturally found in south-western Western Australia growing in a variety of habitats including woodlands, tall sclerophyll forests and heathland that are seasonally inundated or around swamps and along water courses.

It prefers well-drained moderately fertile sandy-stony soils in an open sunny position and is frost and drought resistant.

This hardy and variable hakea is grown for its prolific flowers and prickly leaves. It is planted in small native gardens along borders or as a specimen and is an ideal small bird haven. It is suitable for coastal regions tolerating dry conditions and establishes in 1 to 2 years. ID 1118
