This straggly spreading shrub has spreading stems that form an open bushy habit. It has light green lobed leaves that are stiff and prickly and the mauve to pink tube-shaped flowers appearing in a large tooth brush-like raceme from spring to summer.

is naturally found in Australia in the upper Blue Mountains west of Sydney growing in heathland or around swamps.

It prefers a warm moist summer and grows in damp moderate fertility, peaty sandy loams that are tending acidic in a full sun to semi shaded position. It is frost and light snow tolerant but drought tender.

This shrub is grown in small gardens, parks and bushland settings as a specimen or in borders as a filler plant. It is useful in damp situations with good light and will establish in 2 to 3 years. There is a prostrate form available and it is used as a spill-over along retaining walls. ID 1108
