This monoecious tree has a stout erect greyish trunk with spreading branches that form a dense rounded crown. It has oblong to lanced-shaped dark green leaves and the acorns are rounded and appear during early summer.

Quercus ilex is naturally found in south-west Europe growing in pure stands or in mixed forests from sea level to the lower mountains. It has also naturalised in southern England where it is regarded as a weed.
