This palm forms a shaft-like grey trunk that may be swollen with age and tapers towards the top. It has a rounded crown of arching divided dull green fronds and the purplish cup-shape flowers appear with a club-shaped bract during summer.

Jubaea chilensisis naturally found in South America, Chile and in the wild it has been almost wiped out from the Chileans collecting the sweet sap which keeps exuding for up to 2 years from the decapitated trunk. This sap is used to make wine or a honey-like paste. It is now a protected plant and grows best in temperate climates.

It prefers a open sunny position and grows in deep well drained sandy to light clay loams and is drought tender but mildly frost resistant.

The Chilean Wine Palm is a stately large palm that is grown in parks and large gardens as a specimen or in group plantings. In cold climates it is planted when young in a container under glass with ample light. It is slow growing establishing in 4 to 7 years and dislikes heavy frost and sub tropical or tropical climates, where grows even slower. ID 1038
