This feathery palm has a smooth green trunk that forms a prominent silvery-blue crown shaft with strongly arching divided fronds that are composed of rich green lanced-shaped leaflets. The yellow flowers appear on a broom-like inflorescence.

is naturally found on Lord Howe Island growing on the cliff faces and adjoining land around the coast at an altitude up to 700 m (2,200ft). The climate is temperate with constant cloud mists maintaining a high moisture content and the soils are sandy-stony. It prefers a protected sunny position and is frost and drought tender.

Umbrella Palm is an attractive slow growing palm that is planted in coastal gardens as a specimen or in group plantings for a tropical effect. It is also grown in containers in protected areas or as a glasshouse specimen for cold climates. It establishes from seed in 3 to 5 years and is long lived.
