This large deciduous tree has an upright trunk with ascending spreading branches that form a narrow crown when young becoming broad with age. It has dark green lobed leaves that turn bright red in autumn and the small red flowers appear in clusters in spring.

is naturally found in North America growing from New Foundland to Florida and west from Minnesota to Texas growing in low moist regions.

It prefers a open sunny position and grows in a slightly acidic well drained, moist fertile soil and is drought tender but frost resistant.

Swamp Maple is grown for its autumn colour and its rounded crown. It is used as a street tree or lawn specimen for shade and is commonly planted in a woodland setting. It establishes in 3 to 5 years with variable growth rates and is long lived. The timber is used for joinery and the tree is fast growing when young. ID 992
