This sub-shrub has greyish hairy upright spreading stems that form a compact rounded habit. It has silvery-grey felt-like leaves that are deeply lobed and the mustard coloured daisy-like flowers appear in clusters from spring to summer.

Senecio cinerariais naturally found in the western and central Mediterranean region from Turkey to Spain, southern France and Italy growing on cliffs and rocky coastal sites. It has also naturalised in parts of North America and Great Britain.

It prefers a moderately fertile well drained sandy-stony to clay loam with reliable moisture in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.

Silver Ragwort is commonly grown for its foliage, whitish stems and its yellow flower heads. It is planted in small or cottage gardens along perennial borders for colour contrast or used as a spill-over in rockeries or above low walls. It may also be grown in containers establishing in one season but is usually short lived. ID 963

"senecio", from Latin senescre, "to age" - referring to the white hairs on the leaves; "cineraria", Latin word meaning "ash-coloured" - referring to the leaf colour.
