This clump forming bamboo has a slender upright growth habit with dark green canes (culms) with nodes that are spaced up to 600 mm (2 ft) apart. It has variable bright green lanced-shaped leaves and the plant is grown in warmer climates.

The Temple Bamboo is grown for its stems and clumping habit. It is planted as a specimen in parks or large gardens or used for screening along borders. It can also be grown in patio tubs and planter boxes or used in woodland settings. It prefers a warm environment and may be grown under glass in cold climates. It has red- brown sheaths and the canes are easily marked but the plant forms an attractive stand.
