This vigorous bamboo has running rhizomes with upright slender canes (culms) to 10mm (? in)thick that have brownish marks when mature and forms a clump. Each node produces a single branch that has broad elliptical dark glossy green leaves.

Sasa palmata is naturally found in Japan growing in the understorey of woodlands and is very invasive. It prefers a well drained moist organic rich soil in a semi shaded to sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Japanese Palm Bamboo is a large leafed bamboo that is planted in the understorey in parks or large gardens. It is also used along borders for screening in a low light position. it is planted in tubs or planter boxes and used around a water feature but requires containment to control.It has a tropical appearance and is fast growing establishing in 2 to 3 years but care should be taken when planting as it readily escapes.
