This large rhizomatous bamboo has canes (culms) up to 180 mm (7in) wide and mature to yellow with dark sheaths and forms a clump. The small dark green lanced-shaped leaves are arranged in layers. This attractive species may be difficult to establish.

Phyllostachys edulis is naturally found in Japan growing in bamboo forests on the mountains and along the coast. It prefers a well drained moderately fertile moist soil in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Moso is an attractive bamboo that will normally not attain its full height under cultivation and is grown as a specimen in parks and gardens or is used for screening along borders. It is also used as a wind break and has a moderate growth rate establishing in 4 years. The rhizomes must be cut or contained to control the size of the clump. ID 907
