This large clump forming bamboo has bright green well spaced canes (culms) up to 150 mm (6 in) in diameter with thick reddish large sheaths. The long branches have terminal dark green lanced-shaped leaves and the smaller 'Castillonis' has yellow canes.

Phyllostachys bambusoides is naturally found in China growing in bamboo forests in well drained moderately fertile moist sandy stony soils. It prefers an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Giant Timber Bamboo is planted in large gardens or parks and is planted in sealed containers as it spreads quickly to form a large invasive clump. It establishes in 2-3 years and is planted on hill sides for soil stabilisation. The cultivar 'Castillonis' is attractive form that is used as a container or specimen plant or for screen planting along borders. ID 905
