This large tree has a shaft-like trunk with rough fibrous bark and spreading branches that form a dense crown. It has grey-green leathery textured elliptical leaves and the cream cup-shaped flowers appear in a fluffy globular cluster in early summer.

It prefers a well drained deep fertile sandy soil in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant but frost tender.
