This small tree has a upright greyish-white trunk with spreading branches that form a dense rounded crown. It has broad glossy green lanced-shaped leaves and the yellow fragrant wheel-shaped flowers appear in a cluster from late spring to summer.

The Water Gum is grown for its growth habit and its flowers. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen tree or used in gully plantings. It is also grown as a street tree and used in shrub borders for screening. It establishes in 2 to 4 years and is long lived. This tree is also planted in coastal rainforest settings, where it is naturally found growing along water courses tolerating sunny to deep shaded positions.
