This short lived rhizomatous perennial has slender upright stems and forms a small clump. It has long stalked mid-green lanced-shaped leaves and the bright yellow flower heads appear solitary on leafy stem above the foliage from spring to summer.

Coreopsis lanceolata is naturally found in Central America growing along forest margins and in grasslands. It prefers a well drained, fertile moist sandy soil in an open sunny position and is drought resistant but frost tender.

Coreopsis is grown for its prolific flowers and is planted in herbaceous borders in small or cottage gardens or grown in patio pots or planter boxes. It is also grown on roof gardens or used in woodland settings. It seeds freely and tolerates a wide range of climate zones and is commonly seen on disturbed land along railway embankments, walking tracks and in bushland settings. ID 840
