Ceanothus papillosus is naturally found in North America growing in California on the coastal mountain ranges. It prefers a well drained fertile moist sandy soil in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.

The Wartleaf Ceanothus is grown for its showy flowers and rounded bushy habit. It is planted around buildings or along borders as a low screen. It is also grown in tubs and planter boxes and is excellent for coastal regions. It is used in rocky hill side gardens and establishes in 1 to 2 years but is short lived in warm wet areas. ID 832
