This perennial has upright slender stems that form a bushy rounded clump. It has lanced-shaped blue-green leaves and the profuse erect blue bell-shaped flowers appear in a cluster above the foliage during summer.

Platycodon grandiflorus is naturally found from China to Japan growing in well drained fertile moist sandy to light clay loams that are rich and organic. It prefers an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
