This herbaceous perennial has slender woody twinning stems with tubers in the ground and on the reddish shoots and grows over structures or shrubs. It has fleshy green heart-shaped leaves and the small greenish saucer-shaped flowers appear in autumn.

Anredera cordifolia is naturally found in South America growing in forest margins and in disturbed soils. It prefers a well drained, moderatly fertile moist to wet sandy soil in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.
Madeira Vine is not normally cultivated as a ornamental but can be used to grows on fences or over structures for screening and for shade. It can also form a mat habit on open ground or on dunes and can climb into trees smothering them. It is difficult to eradicate as all tubers must be dug out or collected. ID 823
