Portulaca oleracea is naturally found in Europe growing in disturbed soils and in lawn areas. It prefers a well drained, fertile moist light soil in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.
Pigweed is the oldest of the cultivated Portulaca species and is grown for its spreading habit. It is used as a ground cover in small gardens or as a spill-over in a container in cooler climates but in warm climates it is commonly a weed that infests garden beds. ID 822
Note:
If stock eats sufficient quantities oxalate poisoning will occur. It is normally controlled by physical removal when young.
