Banksia coccinais naturally found in south-western Western Australia growing in scrubland and woodlands on or near the coast.
It prefers a open sunny position and grows in very well drained sandy loam that is low in phosphates and nitrates and is mildly frost and drought tolerant.
The Scarlet Banksia is grown for its flowers and bushy habit. It is planted in small or native gardens along borders or grown as a specimen in a botanic collection. The flowers are used in floral arrangements and the plant can be grown in patio pots or planter boxes. It is reluctant to flower under cultivation but is fast growing and establishes in 2 to 4 years. It may be difficult to cultivate in the eastern states preferring a Mediterranean climate. ID 783
