Pennisetum alopecuroides is naturally found in eastern Australia growing in well drained moderately fertile moist light soils in an open sunny position and is frost and drought resistant.

Fountain Grass is grown for its foliage and clumping habit. It is planted along freeways or in low maintenance parklands and domestic gardens. It is fast growing and establishes in one season requiring little maintenance but may become a weed as it self-sows readily. It is also planted along borders or used in tubs and planter boxes.
