This fast growing perennial grass is strongly stoloniferous and has a small rhizome and forms an open mat habit. It has pale green narrow lance-shape leaves and the greenish flower heads stand erect above the foliage during summer.

Paspalum vaginatum is naturally found from tropical North and South America growing in an open sunny position in well drained sandy loams but will tolerate marshy and saline conditions. It is drought tolerant and slightly frost hardy.

Paspalum is a course texture turf that is grown for its rapid growth and spreading habit. It is used for erosion control along creek embankments or for lawns where the water is of poor condition as in around swimming pools. Note:
It can grow to 1m (3ft) high and has become a weedin pastures or along roadside edges. It prefers ample rainfall and fertile soils and will re-shoot from the rhizomes after disturbance or fire.
