This genus of perennial cactus form a spherical to cylindrical habit with parallel or spiralling ribs that are separated by diagonal grooves. The areoles produce sparsely, slightly curved spines and the pink to yellow funnel-shaped flowers appear in summer.

This genus of cactus are grown in small or arid gardens as a specimen or in rockeries and are excellent flowering indoor plants. These plants are also suitable for roof gardens or sunny courtyards.
