This prostrate perennial grass has course textured foliage and spreads by long stout stolons in the warm season. It has smooth blue-green lanced-shaped leaves with a blunt apex and thatching forms a thick spongy mat. The small flowers appear in spring.

Stenotaphrum secundatumis naturally found in the West Indies growing in well drained moist organic rich sandy loam with a pH 6.5 - 7.5. It prefers a open sunny to partialy shaded position and is frost and drought tender but salt spray tolerant.

Buffalo turfgrass is grown for its dense cover and year round colour. It is used where fine texture turf is not required as in domestic gardens or seaside plantings and is used in commercial landscapes.
